This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Associate Underwriter, Technical Risk based in Canada.
This is a full-time, 9-month contract opportunity for an insurance professional supporting the underwriting of complex and significant commercial risks.
You will help develop tailored insurance solutions that address the specific needs of business clients.
The role combines technical underwriting, risk assessment, problem-solving, and relationship management.
You will work closely with a broad network of broker partners to structure appropriate coverage and deliver responsive service.
As part of a collaborative team, you will benefit from coaching, mentoring, and exposure to experienced underwriters.

The role can be based in Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton, with a hybrid work model providing meaningful flexibility.
Accountabilities:
- Underwrite commercial insurance policies, assessing complex and technical risks and developing solutions aligned with client and broker needs.
- Analyze risk information, policy requirements, underwriting guidelines, contracts, pricing programs, technical manuals, and other relevant sources to support sound underwriting decisions.
- Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to evaluate risks, identify appropriate coverage solutions, and address underwriting challenges.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with broker partners through responsive communication, regular meetings, and high-quality service.
- Collaborate closely with experienced underwriters and team members to develop customized solutions across different categories of commercial risk.
- Ensure underwriting decisions and recommendations comply with applicable regulatory requirements, internal guidelines, and established processes.
- Use computerized underwriting and insurance systems effectively to support accurate, efficient policy administration.
- Respond promptly to broker inquiries and follow up on outstanding information to facilitate timely underwriting decisions.
- Contribute to a collaborative team environment by sharing knowledge, participating in coaching and mentoring opportunities, and continuously developing technical expertise.
Requirements:
- 2+ years of underwriting experience, with demonstrated experience handling commercial or technical risks.
- Postsecondary education or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience in property and casualty insurance is an asset.
- Practical knowledge of underwriting guidelines, insurance contracts, pricing programs, risk-information sources, technical or underwriting manuals, regulatory requirements, and computerized insurance processes.
- Strong customer-service skills, with the ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with brokers and other stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical and critical-thinking abilities, with a structured approach to assessing risks and resolving problems.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to respond effectively to emails, calls, and other broker requests.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team while also exercising sound judgment and taking ownership of underwriting decisions.
- A willingness to learn and develop deeper expertise in complex commercial insurance and technical risk.
