This senior underwriting leadership role is responsible for shaping enterprise-wide risk selection strategy, guiding underwriting teams, and ensuring strong mortality and profitability outcomes across complex life insurance business. The Associate (VP) Chief Underwriter operates at the intersection of technical underwriting expertise, executive leadership, and cross-functional collaboration, influencing product design, pricing, and reinsurance strategy. This role is highly visible, serving as a key decision-maker for large and complex cases while also driving consistency and excellence across underwriting practices. It requires strong leadership in developing underwriting talent and building a high-performing, accountable organization. The position also plays a critical role in underwriting modernization efforts, including the adoption of advanced analytics and AI-enabled tools. It is ideal for a seasoned underwriting executive who thrives in a strategic, high-impact environment.
Accountabilities:
- Lead enterprise underwriting risk selection strategy, ensuring alignment between underwriting guidelines, mortality assumptions, product pricing, and profitability objectives.
- Serve as a final decision-maker for highly complex, high-risk, and jumbo life insurance cases, applying advanced underwriting judgment and authority.
- Build, lead, and develop underwriting leaders and teams, including succession planning, organizational design, and performance management.
- Establish and maintain trusted relationships with field leaders and Financial Professionals, balancing strong decision-making with partnership and credibility.
- Partner with Product, Actuarial, and Reinsurance teams to align underwriting strategy with pricing, risk appetite, and product evolution.
- Oversee underwriting quality, mortality outcomes, and performance metrics through audits, trend analysis, and corrective action planning.
- Lead underwriting transformation initiatives, including process improvements, technology adoption, vendor solutions, and AI-enabled underwriting capabilities.
- Represent underwriting leadership in enterprise discussions, governance forums, and strategic industry engagements.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive life insurance underwriting experience, including extensive exposure to complex and jumbo cases.
- Demonstrated executive underwriting authority of $20M+ and experience making high-stakes underwriting decisions.
- Proven experience leading large underwriting organizations and senior underwriting leaders.
- Strong expertise in medical, financial, and non-medical risk assessment within life insurance underwriting.
- Deep understanding of reinsurance structures, mortality risk, and large-case underwriting dynamics.
- Strong strategic thinking and ability to align underwriting practices with business growth, distribution, and pricing objectives.
- Excellent executive communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience driving underwriting modernization, including technology and AI-enabled solutions.
- Professional designations (ACS, ALU, FLMI, FALU, CLU) preferred.
