Senior Data and Backend Engineer
Amarina SearchThis position is not eligible for current or future employment visa sponsorship.
Our client is seeking a Senior Data and Backend Engineer to join their team. This role will be split between data engineering and product/backend engineering and is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys building reliable data infrastructure while also contributing directly to a growing product.
You’ll join a small, experienced technical team and take ownership of the systems that move, structure, and secure critical data. The ideal candidate brings strong backend engineering experience, deep practical knowledge of data pipelines, and the ability to make thoughtful architectural decisions in a fast-moving environment.
Tech Stack
-
Python + Django
- TypeScript + React
- PostgreSQL
- AWS
- Snowflake
- Dagster
Key Responsibilities
- Work hands-on within the existing Snowflake, Dagster, and AWS environment, simplifying unnecessary complexity and making architectural decisions that support scalability and reliability.
- Design, build, and maintain automated ETL pipelines that transform varied source data into structured, reliable outputs.
- Build orchestration and observability capabilities, including logging, error reporting, monitoring, and dashboards, to identify and resolve issues early.
- Design repeatable and secure data integrations with external systems while minimizing data requirements and implementation burden.
- Partner with security and compliance stakeholders to ensure sensitive data is appropriately protected, access controls are enforced, and regulated data is handled securely.
- Contribute beyond the data layer by working on backend data models, services, integrations, and APIs.
- Collaborate closely with a small technical team on architecture, product development, and technical problem-solving.
- Communicate effectively in an asynchronous environment through clear updates, technical documentation, design diagrams, code reviews, and prototypes.
- Take ownership of technical decisions while remaining comfortable contributing across different areas of the stack.
Expected Experience
- 7+ years of experience building automated ETL and data pipelines.
- Strong backend development experience using Python and frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.
- Experience developing REST APIs and working extensively with SQL.
- Strong experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or AWS Step Functions.
- Knowledge of modern data warehousing patterns and technologies. Snowflake experience is a plus.
- Strong cloud infrastructure experience, preferably AWS.
- Practical experience working across multiple types of data stores, including object storage, key-value stores, and relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL.
- Experience with authentication, authorization, and the secure handling of sensitive data in regulated environments such as healthcare or financial services.
- Solid operations fundamentals, including CI/CD and containerized development workflows.
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design principles.
- Experience incorporating AI-forward development practices into engineering workflows.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who is technically strong, deeply curious, and proactive. You should be comfortable taking ownership, identifying opportunities to improve existing systems, and working collaboratively without requiring a highly structured environment.
Because the team is small, this role is best suited for a generalist who has deep backend and data expertise but is also willing to contribute wherever needed.
