This position is based at our Northshore location (2077 Town Center Blvd in Knoxville, TN) and follows a hybrid/remote schedule (in the office two days per week). Ideally, we would like to fill this position with someone local to the Knoxville area; however, we will also consider fully remote applicants for this role. Job Summary: The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for underwriting loans to mitigate risk and meet all applicable Federal, State and NCUA regulations, as well as credit union, secondary market and investor guidelines, policies and procedures. Supervisory component will be utilized for daily function of the 7 Mortgage Underwriting Business Unit, assisting underwriters who underwrite mortgage loans, ensuring service standards are met, and ensuring effective processes are in place to deliver a desired member experience.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Performs activities related to credit decisions on loan request with the goal of achieving an optimal outcome for the Credit Union and the member. Primarily handles more complicated loans. Supervises and leads the activities of the Mortgage Underwriters who underwrite mortgage loans. Perform supervisory responsibilities as needed working directly with AVP of Mortgage Underwriting. Responsibilities may include planning, assigning and directing work, reviewing and approving timesheets, coordinating PTO, addressing and resolving problems and providing training and support as required. Ensures compliance with established Credit Union policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements. Utilizes a high degree of independence in problem solving and decision making. Works directly with the Mortgage Loan Coordinators, Manager Mortgage Processing & Closing, AVP Mortgage Underwriting to deliver exceptional underwriting service and support to our Partners.
- Maintains current knowledge of regulatory changes, external/internal compliance requirements and investor/portfolio guidelines. Receives training to ensure all guidelines are met.
- Resolves issues with client, credit union staff, title companies, or members as relates to the mortgage closing process. Works files as needed.
- Manages pipeline reports, ensuring adherence to the Mortgage Process Flow. Manages QC reports to ensure compliance. Ensures quality control of files and accuracy of data in the system used for uploading to the servicer.

Experience: Five or more years of mortgage underwriting or mortgage experience with a focus on FNMA, FHLMC, DE Designation, and SAR Designation is required.
Education: Associates degree in a business-related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience is required.
