Senior Underwriter – US Healthcare Reinsurance

Role Summary

The Senior Underwriter will play a key role in the underwriting and risk assessment of medical reinsurance opportunities, with a primary focus on quota share and excess of loss structures. This position is responsible for evaluating new and renewal business, developing pricing recommendations, managing underwriting referrals, and contributing to strong broker and client relationships. The role partners closely with internal stakeholders to ensure disciplined underwriting and effective portfolio management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, underwrite, and manage quota share and excess of loss medical reinsurance opportunities for new and renewal business.
  • Develop excess of loss pricing, including rate analyses and coverage evaluations aligned with portfolio and profitability objectives.
  • Evaluate and structure quota share arrangements, including assessment of ceded portfolios, retention structures, and underwriting controls.
  • Handle underwriting referrals and exceptions, applying sound judgment while ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and authority limits.
  • Support portfolio management through monitoring of performance, exposure trends, and emerging risks.
  • Build and maintain strong, productive relationships with brokers and ceding companies, serving as a reliable underwriting partner.
  • Collaborate closely with Underwriting Assistants, Actuarial, Claims, and Technical Accounting to ensure consistent execution and information flow across the underwriting lifecycle.
  • Contribute to underwriting documentation, contract wording reviews, and internal reporting as needed.
  • Participate in the ongoing enhancement of underwriting guidelines, pricing approaches, and risk management practices.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, actuarial science, insurance, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Significant underwriting experience in medical reinsurance, healthcare risk, or related insurance lines.
  • Strong working knowledge of quota share and excess of loss structures and pricing concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex risk profiles and make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Proven experience working with brokers and ceding companies in a client-facing underwriting role.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions in a fast-paced, deal-oriented environment.

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $192,000.00 to $320,000.00. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.  

In addition, you will be offered competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
