Position overview
We’re looking for a Senior Writer to join the Fundraising team.
At its core, this role is responsible for writing email and digital communications that raise funds for Avaaz campaigns -- turning urgent global issues into clear, compelling appeals that mobilise thousands of people to contribute.
Alongside fundraising emails, you will also shape the broader communications that sustain our fundraising programme -- including email updates on campaign impact, onboarding journeys, and other member communications that build trust and long-term engagement.
This is not a grant-writing or traditional fundraising role. You won’t be writing grants or long-form proposals. You’ll be writing for a crowdfunding-based model, where success depends on clarity, speed, and the ability to connect with a global audience at scale.
Why this role matters
Avaaz’s ability to act quickly and effectively depends on the support of our members. The quality of our writing directly shapes whether critical campaigns get funded -- from protecting frontline communities to responding to global crises in real time.
This role sits at the heart of that work.
Responsibilities
You’ll work closely with campaigners and fundraisers to deliver high-impact communications that mobilise support for urgent global campaigns.
In a typical week, you will:
-
Translate Avaaz campaign goals into clear, compelling calls to action that drive donations
-
Write and refine fundraising emails, subject lines, and campaign messaging for a global audience
-
Collaborate on A/B testing strategies, analysing results and iterating quickly
-
Review performance data and adjust messaging based on what’s working
-
Draft onboarding journeys, report-backs, and other member communications
-
Contribute to broader fundraising and messaging strategy
-
Edit and give feedback on others’ writing, helping to raise the overall quality of the team’s output
-
Respond quickly to global events, turning emerging moments into fundraising opportunities
Experience & Skills
Strong candidates will likely have:
-
At least 5 years experience in copywriting, journalism, campaigning, or fundraising communications
-
Demonstrated success in writing that drives action (e.g. donations, sign-ups, mobilisation)
-
A solid understanding of digital marketing or campaigning tools and practices
-
Experience working in fast-paced, collaborative environments
-
Excellent written and spoken English
What kind of person thrives in this role
-
You’re a writer at heart, someone who thinks carefully about language, tone, and storytelling. You're passionate about the power of words to move people and create change.
-
But you’re not just a storyteller -- your writing is grounded in an analytical mindset, shaped by experience in digital campaigning, marketing, or performance-driven communications.
-
You thrive working in a fully remote, but highly collaborative team environment
-
You’re experienced with A/B testing and audience segmentation, using data to refine decision-making and iteration.
-
You can move fast, deliver to tight timelines, and maintain quality under pressure
-
You take ownership of your work and don’t need heavy direction to get things done.
-
You actively seek out and respond well to feedback, seeing input from colleagues as a gift that improves our work, enabling learning and development
-
You’re able to move between big-picture messaging and precise execution, adapting your writing to different contexts and goals.
-
You have a passion for global justice, citizen empowerment, and social change.
