Overview

During your placement you will train and become an engineer on one of our many development teams building websites, mobile and colleague applications for our business.

No prior software development experience is required, as we will provide all training required to be successful.  A desire to learn, collaborate and to discover how to create efficient and well-designed engineering solutions is all that is required.  To accept the role, you will need to meet the entry requirements for and accept a place on the Level 6 programme with the Open University.

The role will require you to attend our Southampton Office regularly, with the option to work remotely on other days.  Occasional (expensed and supported) travel may be required to other office locations.  Initially this will be a 12-month fixed term contract which will be extended to cover the remainder of the degree programme term based on job and academic performance.

What's the job?

  • Undertake training in software engineering in order to design and implement user stories in accordance with Kingfisher standards.  This could be on any of our teams, but we try to take your preferences into account.
  • Become Proficient with industry standard development tools including AI assisted development.
  • Work in an Agile development team, pairing with other software engineers and other non-technical team members to implement and test user stories.
  • Engage and shadow more experienced engineers and non-technical team members to learn professional skills and best practices.

What you'll bring

  • Level 2 English Language & Maths
  • Numerate A-Level (or other Level 3) qualifications that meet the course entry requirements.
  • A strong desire to learn and grow, with a proactive attitude to developing new skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment 
  • Curious and analytical mindset with an interest in problem solving
  • Good communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions and share ideas
  • Organised, with the ability to manage time across work and study commitments
