Orbital Engineering, Inc. is currently seeking a Structural Engineering Department Manager for our Midwest Region. This is a fully remote position, with the ideal candidate located within or able to support the Midwest Region. This person would provide technical leadership, department management, and project execution oversight for structural engineering work on a variety of heavy industrial and infrastructure projects. The position requires project and resource management experience in a consulting environment, along with well-rounded expertise in structural engineering for steel, manufacturing, petrochemical, chemical, mining, materials processing, and power generation facilities. The Department Manager will perform in varying roles related to department leadership, project management, senior structural technical support, quality control, and customer relationship development.
Responsibilities Include but Are Not Limited To:
Schedule, organize, direct, and review all structural engineering department resources and activities to support safe, efficient, and high-quality project execution.
Participate in the development of new and expansion of existing business opportunities.
Provide enhanced customer support as a technical liaison and support regional business development initiatives as a technical resource.
Hire staff, establish individual goals and expectations, and conduct performance reviews. Direct, develop, supervise, and provide technical guidance to all direct reports.
Establish and execute operational plans for the structural engineering department with respect to staffing, workload planning, tools, resources, and development of technical skill sets.
Develop and implement policies, standards, procedures, and quality control practices for structural engineering and technical work performed in the department.
Function as Project Manager, Lead Structural Engineer, Structural Engineer of Record, and/or Senior Engineer on specific projects as required.
Prepare, or supervise the preparation of, single or multidiscipline engineering proposals including development of scopes of work, project schedules and cost estimates.
Prepare, review, and/or check structural engineering calculations, designs, drawings, models, specifications, and other project documents related to structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, foundations, and industrial support systems as required.
Develop, maintain, and upgrade structural technical standards, design guides, specifications, calculation templates, and centralized design basis and historical references.
Support the organization through interaction with managers and staff at other Orbital offices, including recruiting and training efforts.
Ensure all department operational and project activities are completed in accordance with Orbital’s Project Management system through implementation and enforcement of stated policies and practices.
Lead projects with a variety of durations, prioritizing both long-term planning, as well as provide leadership in a fast-paced engineering environment requiring expedited turnaround.
This role is fully remote; occasional field engineering work, client meetings, business development travel, and travel to Orbital offices or project sites may be required from time to time.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline with a structural emphasis.
PE license is required
Minimum of ten years of prior relevant engineering experience is required, with preference given to individuals exposed to heavy industrial environments and marketplaces.
Technical knowledge and/or expertise in multiple areas of structural engineering including, but not limited to structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, foundations, pipe supports, equipment supports, platforms, access structures, industrial buildings, and applicable structural design codes and standards.
Successful experience in leadership roles managing engineering teams and/or engineering departments is also required, preferably in a consulting engineering environment.
Superior communication and interpersonal skills with clients and engineering personnel.
Candidates should have a thorough understanding and aptitude in the use of current computer software including business enterprise and project management tools, as well as structural analysis, design, drafting, and document review tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Project Management Training and/or PMP
Project management experience including an understanding/use of project management and project control principles/tools.
Experience with structural analysis and design software such as STAAD, RAM, RISA, Tekla Tedds, Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar tools.
Salary Range:
$135,000 - $175,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
