Accountabilities
- Provide expert technical underwriting assessment for life and disability insurance applications, applying individual risk evaluation methods to ensure accurate and consistent decisions.
- Manage complex underwriting cases independently while respecting established approval authority limits, including up to 750,000 CAD for life insurance and 2,500 CAD for disability coverage.
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and professionally with applicants, brokers, and internal stakeholders, ensuring transparency and understanding throughout the process.
- Negotiate with reinsurers and identify alternative solutions to support case approvals when appropriate.
- Collaborate with third-party administrators and partners to evaluate risk and ensure alignment with underwriting standards.
- Act as a subject matter resource during contestability periods, supporting claims review and decision validation.
- Contribute to maintaining underwriting quality, consistency, and compliance with internal guidelines and Canadian insurance regulations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, health sciences, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in life and/or disability underwriting within a regulated insurance environment.
- Strong understanding of insurance contracts, underwriting principles, and Canadian regulatory frameworks.
- Professional designations such as FLMI or FALU (completed or in progress) considered an asset.
- Excellent analytical thinking, judgment, and problem-solving abilities in complex case assessment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- High level of autonomy, proactivity, and accountability in managing workload and priorities.
- Bilingual proficiency in French and English, with the ability to communicate effectively in both languages in a professional context.
