Primary Function

The Underwriter III is responsible for responding to internal and external customers on questions regarding loans underwritten by the company. This position will underwrite loans in a timely manner for completeness and compliance with company guidelines, polices, and procedures. This position will also provide training, guidance, and support for all team members.

Principal Duties:

  • Review, analyze and make final determination on loan submissions using manual underwriting guidelines as well as validating recommendations.
  • Underwrite loans as determined by lending authority set by management.
  • Work with Lending Teams to identify potential solutions/alternatives for difficult/denied loan files.
  • Communicate with internal and external clients on inquiries on loans underwritten by Vendors.
  • Research and respond to team lead on loans requiring additional escalation and review and ability to summarize issues, concerns, and recommendations.
  • Proactively addresses underwriting submission deficiencies.
  • Provide back-up support to Team Leader as necessary to ensure efficient operations and smooth and timely flow of work.
  • Review and maintain guidelines to stay up to date with all requirements.
  • Maintain department resource library to maintain reference material.
  • Review of audit files for Quality/Funding issues to determine compliance and acceptance of loan.
  • Assist in correction of delivery violations and government ensuring deficiencies on specific files as required.
  • Analyze Trust agreements as needed.
  • Participate in the orientation of new personnel to ensure consistency.
  • Provide technical support for systems as necessary.
  • Ability to effectively and accurately convey information to others.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by management.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; 4-year college degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of underwriting experience with conforming and non-conforming loans.
  • Mortgage banking industry experience with Jumbo Loans and/or Government Products a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • FHA and/or VA Designations Required
  • Ability to differentiate between first and second mortgage underwriting.
  • Ability to handle secure and private information.
  • Technical experience necessary: Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Underwriting software and systems.
  • Ability to stay current with the business environment within third party lending.
  • Excellent customer service skills and analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to a constantly changing environment.
  • Ability to be a creative and innovative problem solver.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Working on-site at assigned office location.
  • Regular and punctual attendance adhering to schedule established by leadership.
  • Flexibility to work occasional adjusted work schedules, overtime, and evening and/or weekend hours to meet deadlines or as business needs demand.
  • Working in a cubicle hub, maintaining focus on phone calls in a noisy environment within earshot of multiple other conversations.
  • Sedentary work in a stationary position at a cubicle for prolonged periods of time.
  • Constant repetitive motions required for operating a computer, such as typing and managing phone calls.
  • Constantly communicating effectively verbally in English, including accurately exchanging information with others following identification of correct procedures.

A good faith estimate of the compensation is:

60,800.00 - 99,960.00

Compensation for this position may also include other elements, including medical, financial, various paid time off benefits, and a bonus based on individual and company performance, variable or annual.

 

Placement within the range will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, skills, experience, qualifications, location, etc.
