6 months contract with a local authority

Job Purpose

• The Chief Accountant will lead the full year‑end accounts closure process for Dudley Council, ensuring the 2025/26 financial statements are completed accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with statutory and professional accounting standards. The postholder will act as the primary point of contact for external auditors, ensuring all audit requirements are met and facilitating a smooth and timely audit process. The Chief Accountant will provide expert financial leadership, coordinate working papers, maintain the closedown timetable, and ensure high‑quality financial reporting across the authority.
  

Key Duties/Accountabilities

• Lead, manage, and deliver the full closure of accounts for the 2025/26 financial year.
  
• Ensure financial statements are accurate, compliant with CIPFA, IFRS, and relevant local authority legislation.
  
• Produce and review high‑quality year‑end notes, schedules, and supporting documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  
• Oversee the preparation, completeness, and quality assurance of all working papers required for year‑end and audit processes.
  

Essential Experience Required

• Significant experience in a senior accounting role within a Local Authority (essential).
  
• Extensive experience delivering local authority year‑end accounts and managing closedown processes.
  
• Strong track record of liaising with external auditors and managing audit requirements.
  
• Experience preparing complex working papers, statutory notes, and financial schedules.
  

Essential Qualifications Required

• CCAB/CIMA qualified accountant (e.g., CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA) – essential.
  
• Evidence of ongoing CPD in public sector or technical financial accounting.
