• 100% remote

• Part-time

• Fully flexible schedule

Create and review challenging materials science problems that test AI systems against real technical constraints, on your own schedule.

AI companies need materials scientists to design difficult technical problems, provide correct analyses, and set standards that show whether an AI answer is sound. You will build realistic scenarios with supporting data, explain the reasoning another scientist should follow, and review work for technical accuracy. This is that work, done remotely around your schedule.

What you'll do

• Design hard problems across structure and properties, processing, characterization, failure analysis, and computational materials

• Turn real materials problems into scenarios with constraints and supporting data that test more than textbook recall

• Write the sound analysis and make the reasoning clear enough for an independent scientist to check

• Create objective grading criteria and review other contributors' problems for sound methods and clear grading

Why this is worth your time

• Get paid $85–$185 an hour

• Apply deep materials science expertise to problems involving metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, semiconductors, thin films, or related areas

• Work directly on AI training tasks by writing solutions, defining correctness, and evaluating technical work

• Fully remote and flexible, no fixed shifts, no commute

Who this is for

• A master's or PhD in materials science, or in a related discipline such as metallurgy, ceramics, polymer science, or condensed matter physics

• Principal, staff, or fellow-level work in industrial research or government research labs, or a faculty appointment at a leading university

• Deep expertise in a materials science specialty, with hands-on ownership of the work

• Sound engineering and scientific judgment when reading constraints and weighing possible solutions

• Can justify a result clearly enough for another scientist to verify independently

• Professional fluency in English

• Publications, patents, or technical leadership experience are helpful

No AI experience needed. AI or large-language-model evaluation experience is a helpful extra, not a requirement.

Pay and details

• $85–$185 hourly under an independent-contractor arrangement

• Part-time, fully flexible schedule; fully remote, United States
