About the Division

The Regional Transformation Division supports the Authority's mission to ensure workers, industries and communities benefit from Australia's transition to a net zero economy. Through a place-based approach, the Authority focuses on four of Australia's key transition regions, the Hunter, Latrobe-Gippsland, Collie and Central Queensland, to foster partnerships and mobilise actions that support sustainable economic and workforce outcomes.

As part of this, the Division also works to ensure First Nations peoples and communities are active participants in, and beneficiaries of, the opportunities created by the transition.

There are four regions’ teams - Hunter, Latrobe-Gippsland, Collie and Central Queensland. Each team leads strategy and advice and coordinates engagement in one priority region. This includes identifying transition challenges and opportunities and working with government, non-government and community stakeholders to facilitate access to opportunities and delivery of associated supports.

About the Roles

The Division are looking to fill multiple Regional Economic Development Officer roles at both the APS 5 and APS 6 classifications in the Collie, Central Queensland and Hunters teams. Roles at the APS 6 level will be expected to have a higher level of responsibility in leading or coordinating work.

As a Regional Economic Development Officer, you will work closely with Assistant Directors to support the delivery of key projects relevant to the specific team/region.

These roles will represent the Authority in the specific region. They will support Authority objectives under the Authority’s Business Plan, especially through strong policy, research and economic development skills. You will bring strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to navigate complex issues in a dynamic operating environment.

We are seeking strongly motivated and collaborative professionals who are passionate about supporting regional communities through Australia’s net zero transformation and working on the challenges facing regional workers and communities. They will have a policy and economic background to support the team’s objectives to drive industry and job growth whilst supporting workforce transitioning away from coal industries.

Ideal candidates will have strategic policy skills, including familiarity with Government systems and processes, and have interest in net zero, energy systems, economic development, industry and jobs growth, place-based policy and/or workforce support.

Ideal candidates will also need to be able to work productively and collaboratively with a geographically dispersed team.

Desirable Location

We are seeking to recruit people who currently reside in our priority regions, noting that in the Latrobe, Collie and Central Queensland these would be on a 100% remote working arrangement (work from home). We currently have offices in Canberra and Sydney, and in the Hunter, there is a small Newcastle presence. However, consideration based on location will determine whether the role will be remote or whether there is an expectation to work some days in the office.

Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency Head has agreed otherwise, in writing. To be eligible for a position at the Authority, you should be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application, unless exceptional circumstances apply.

Successful applicants will be required to undergo the process to obtain and maintain or continue to hold the required security level for the role as indicated. All Authority staff are required to have a minimum baseline security clearance prior to commencement.

Successful applicants will be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, including a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, and will normally be subject to a six-month probation period if new to the APS, or if they have not yet completed their probation period elsewhere in the APS.
