Introduction

Hemisphere Talent Solutions is seeking Software Test & Validation Engineers with strong SQL and database testing skills for its talent pool supporting US-based technology, engineering and enterprise clients. You will verify that full-stack applications and their underlying data work correctly, securely and in line with required standards.

You will work remotely as part of US project teams, reporting to the client's manager and working in the client's systems. You will test from the database layer up through APIs and user interfaces, combining white-box and black-box techniques.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design and execute test plans and test cases for full-stack applications, covering the database, API and user interface layers.
  • Write and run complex SQL queries to validate data accuracy, completeness and integrity across tables, systems and environments.
  • Perform white-box testing of database objects, including stored procedures, functions, triggers, views and schema changes.
  • Perform black-box functional, regression, integration and end-to-end testing from the user's perspective.
  • Test ETL/ELT processes and data migrations, reconciling source and target data.
  • Validate CRUD operations, referential integrity, constraints, transactions and error handling.
  • Carry out compliance testing against client and regulatory requirements, including data privacy, access controls and audit trails.
  • Build and maintain automated database and API tests, and integrate them into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Create and manage test data, including masking of sensitive data.
  • Log, track and retest defects, and produce clear test reports and validation documentation.
  • Collaborate with US developers, data engineers, product owners and QA teams in Agile sprints.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3–7 years of software testing experience, including at least 2 years of hands-on database or data testing.
  • Advanced SQL: complex joins, subqueries, CTEs, window functions, aggregations and data reconciliation queries.
  • Experience testing relational databases such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Ability to read and test stored procedures, functions and triggers (white-box testing).
  • Solid black-box testing skills: test design, boundary and negative testing, regression and end-to-end testing.
  • Understanding of full-stack application architecture: front end, APIs and database.
  • API testing experience with Postman, REST Assured or similar.
  • Hands-on test automation in at least one language: Python, Java, C# or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with Jira or Azure DevOps, Git and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Understanding of Agile/Scrum and the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong attention to detail, clear written documentation and professional English communication.
  • Willingness to work overlapping US business hours.

Package & Remuneration

  • You will be a fixed-term employee of Hemisphere Talent Solutions' South African entity, with your contract matched to the client project.
  • You will work remotely from a checked home setup or from our Johannesburg office, using client-managed devices and secure access. Hemisphere does not hold client data.
  • The selection process includes a practical SQL and test-design assessment, followed by client interviews.
