POSITION SUMMARY

General Purpose

The Waste Reduction System Technician is responsible for operating the equipment and the process of waste management in the performance of assigned activities within the department and reports to Director of operations, EVS.

Performs a variety of general cleaning tasks to maintain the Waste handling areas, loading dock and other specialized areas of the hospital. Assists in training of staff and provides direction to employees.

Essential (Primary) Functions:

The primary responsibility of the Waste Reduction System Technician is to provide the highest quality of service to customers at all times. Other responsibilities include ensuring a safe working environment for all employees, enforcing safety guidelines, building awareness about safety, maintaining KPC and regulatory agency standards. The Waste Reduction System Technician also monitors the entire waste system and provides suggestions for increased service or productivity, monitors day-to-day activities of Housekeeping Aides for specific work or functional activities related to waste processing. The Waste Reduction System Technician disseminates procedures to Housekeeping Aides, gives simple work directions, resolves problems, oversees the waste reduction process including operation and troubleshooting of autoclave, Lift, tipper, grinder/shredder, compactor and waste carts. The Waste Reduction System Technician assist in maintenance functions, preventative maintenance functions and trains assigned employees. The Waste Reduction System Technician will also make recommendations for improved performance and supply purchases.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way would be:

High School

Experience/Requirements

2 years Hospital Housekeeping experience

OR:

12 to 18 months related experience or completion of vocational training program

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems.

Absentee replacement on short notice.

Exposure to infections and contagious diseases.

Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.

Hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids and wastes.

Hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment.

Housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals.

Ability to:

Work in a self-directed environment and meet prescribed deadlines and/or goals

Handle emergency or crisis situations.

Deal with varying and unpredictable situations.

Contact with patients, staff and others under wide variety of circumstances.

Work in precarious or high locations (ladders. scaffolding etc).

Be subjected to many interruptions and complete assigned task(s).
