About Waterfront Alliance 
The Waterfront Alliance is a civic organization that brings together a diverse alliance of more than 1,100 Partners with ties to the New York–New Jersey waterways. Founded in 2007, our mission is to lead the way for thriving and resilient waterfronts, shorelines, and coastlines, together. Key programs and advocacy areas include climate resilience, public access to the waterfront, the working waterfront, and climate education.  

Position Description 
We seek an experienced grant writer to provide approximately 10–20 hours per month on a contract basis. This is a remote position.   

Reporting to the director of development and collaborating closely with the president and CEO, the grant writer is responsible for drafting LOIs, writing narrative grant proposals, and preparing reports for a range of current and prospective private foundations, corporate foundations, and government agencies. They will collaborate with other staff as required to develop compelling and high-quality narratives. 

Responsibilities 

  • Prospect Research: Identify and evaluate new foundation, government, and corporate funding opportunities aligned with our mission. 

  • Proposal Templates: Develop and refine reusable proposal templates, case statements, and boilerplate content that reflect Waterfront Alliance's priorities and voice. 

  • Custom Proposals & Grant Applications: Research, write, and edit tailored grant proposals and letters of inquiry for foundation and government funders. 

We may also request other writing support, including appeals and impact reports.  

Qualifications 

  • Minimum 5 years of grant writing experience, preferably with environmental, waterfront, or urban advocacy organizations 

  • Demonstrated success securing grants from foundations, government agencies, and/or corporate funders 

  • Strong research, writing, and project management skills 

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
